Stone walls
We build new and restore old stone walls. For our ancestors, the durability and functionality of the wall were its most important properties. However, in modern times, stone walls also serve as decorations. Whatever the time, stone walls are still a dependable choice that will last for years to come.
Types of stone walls
- Limestone wall
- Flagstone wall (ironstone wall)
- Mixed wall
In order to build or restore a lasting stone wall, certain rules must be followed to ensure its durability and pleasing appearance. Old stone walls have predominantly been built of the stones found in the area (fields, meadows) and this local harmony should also be preserved today.
Although a stone wall does not require a foundation, one must still pay attention to the risk of the wall collapsing – the wall must be observed since laying the first layer. The upper stones must not form a wedge for the bottom stones. Instead, the upper stones must be fixed securely and be supported by the bottom stones in at least three points. It is very important to adhere to the existing pattern of the wall in restoring old stone walls. Also, make sure that the so-called vertical joints do not overlap.
Stone walls are not demanding in terms of maintenance. Of course, you should not let it grow over with bushes, but all the natural processes occurring inside and on the wall (like moss growing) only add beauty to it.
